How to perform a functional smoke detector test

CRC Smoke Test ® is recommended to test the functional ability of commercial or residential smoke detectors.

Important: BEFORE starting the test
  • Make sure no one is smoking in your home.
  • DO NOT use the phone line while performing the smoke test.
  • Before commencing a smoke test, contact ADT on 0800 111 238 to advise us of the test. We’ll place your alarm system on test signal for 30 minutes which means your alarm can sound during the test without alerting our monitoring centre.
  • Ensure you have your user instructions for your alarm panel handy.
How to perform a functional smoke detector test
  • Shake can well.
  • Hold can two-four feet (50cm-100cm) below smoke detector and spray at unit for three (3) seconds. |
  • If alarm does not sound within five (5) seconds, immediately repeat the process. Some units have built-in delays to reduce false alarms.
  • If alarm still fails to sound, check unit for malfunction or dead batteries.
CAUTION
  • Do not overspray. Overspray may reduce sensitivity until product fully evaporates.
  • For detectors connected to sprinklers, Halon systems or central monitoring systems, be sure system is in test mode before using smoke test.
  • Not for use on carbon monoxide detectors.
Important: AFTER the test is completed
  • Follow the alarm panel user instructions for your panel to reset the system.
  • Contact ADT on 0800 111 238 after testing to see if signals were received from your smoke detector devices.
