Training children in fire safety is important and parents should try and instil some basic understanding of fire safety at an early age. However there are some things we can do as parents to create a safe environment in the home.
- Keep matches and cigarette lighters away from children; keep either up high or in a locked cupboard where children cannot reach or access.
- Place a fire guard around open fires in the home.
- Do not leave children unsupervised around cookers, barbecues, heaters, candles or irons.
- Place child safety covers over plugs to ensure children do not place fingers or items inside.
- Put childproof catches on kitchen cupboards to prevent access to flammable liquids, cleaning products, bleach, poisons etc.
- Involve children in your fire evacuation plan and practice it with them.
- Do not use electric blankets on small children’s beds as they are often subject to bedwetting.
- Turn pot handles inwards on the stove so small children cannot pull the contents over themselves.
- Do not leave hot irons unattended.
- Teach children not to run if clothing catches fire and to Stop/Drop/Roll and smother the flames.
- Ensure your childminders are aware of the fire safety measures in place in your home and make sure they know how to use a fire extinguisher and fire blanket
- Teach children to notify an adult if they see a smoke or fire.
